NEW YORK – New York and New Jersey city officials are attempting to answer growing questions surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup and preparedness…

NEW YORK – New York and New Jersey city officials are attempting to answer growing questions surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup and preparedness on all levels, including security and transportation that appear to rank high among the areas of concern among fans planning to attend the event.

Many observers wonder if the “Big Apple” and its neighboring partner New Jersey are ready to host the world in what is being billed as the largest sporting event ever produced on American soil. The region will play host to eight games over the six week-event (June 11 - July 19), with all games played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Millions of fans are expected to participate in some way, from watch parties, activations and festivals to actual game attendance. For months, though, fans have balked over high ticket prices, worried about event security and ICE presence, while pushing back against local increases in transportation cost.

Many seemed to wonder whether New York – a place synonymous with world culture – was ready for the arrival of the World Cup.

Local officials have responded.

Last month, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a partnership between New York City and the NYNJ Host Committee that will provide 1,000 World Cup tickets to city residents for $50 each, including free round-trip transportation to MetLife Stadium

Mamdani unveiled the program in Harlem’s Little Senegal neighborhood, a center for New York’s West African community.

The location underscored the city’s effort to frame the World Cup as a moment intended to include the immigrant and working-class communities that helped build soccer culture across the city.

“We want to ensure working-class New Yorkers have the opportunity to be part of it (FIFA World Cup),”  Mamdani said in a statement.

With the New York Knicks heading to their first NBA Finals in nearly three decades, the city’s sports atmosphere has already reached a fever pitch ahead of the World Cup.

But the affordability initiative has also brought tension between New York and New Jersey officials over how the region’s World Cup partnership is being managed, including who benefits from the tournament and who will bear its costs.

MetLife Stadium, which will host eight matches including the final, has become the center of disputes surrounding transportation costs, public spending and even stadium branding.

According to The Athletic, New Jersey officials recently requested that FIFA alter stadium signage so “New Jersey” appears before “New York” on one of the venue’s World Cup signs, arguing the state’s financial and logistical contributions were not being fully recognized.

Transportation costs have also become a growing point of conflict.

The report also noted that New Jersey Transit drew criticism after setting round-trip train fares to the stadium from New York’s Pennsylvania at $98 during the tournament, compared to the route’s usual fare of about $13.

State officials argued FIFA should shoulder more of the financial burden rather than passing costs onto residents and fans.

“We are committed to ensuring costs are shared fairly,” New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill said in a statement released by his office. “FIFA should cover the cost of transporting its fans.”

For some residents attending the U.S. Men’s National Team roster reveal watch party following the announcement, the excitement surrounding the tournament remained rooted in the sport’s ability to unite people across backgrounds and national identities.

“New Yorkers are always excited to see good games,” said Ronny Concepcion, a New York City resident attending the event. “If USA brings the entertainment and the heat, then we’re going to cheer for them.”

Concepcion said he does not support one particular national team, but instead looks forward to experiencing the atmosphere and energy the tournament will bring to the city.

“I just like watching the sport,” he said. “People are going to show support to whoever they feel is most connected to them or that they favor.”

Supporters at the roster reveal said the growing popularity of soccer in the United States has made the World Cup feel more culturally significant than in previous years.

Kelisha Cyrus, a Queens resident who recently began following international soccer, said attending her first professional soccer match changed how she viewed the sport.

“When I went to my first soccer game, you saw the spirit, you saw the hope,” she said. “It brings a lot of people together because we’re all from different countries and stuff like that.”

Cyrus said she believes New York is prepared for the atmosphere and international attention the tournament will bring, pointing to the city’s sports culture and diversity.

“I think so. I really do,” she said. “Soccer has become one of the most popular sports in America.”

She also pointed to the increasing visibility of Black players on the U.S. Men’s National Team as a meaningful sign of representation.

“That’s amazing,” Cyrus said. “Sometimes with America it’s always more Caucasian versus Black, so that is amazing that they’re bringing in more.”

For younger fans attending the roster reveal, the World Cup also represents national pride and a chance to watch some of the sport’s biggest international stars compete on one of the world’s largest stages.

David Salas, a soccer player and fan at the event, said he is especially excited to watch U.S. midfielder Weston McKennie during the tournament.

“I support him really much,” he said.

Salas said he believes the World Cup has the power to unite communities across cultures and backgrounds.

“For sure,” he said. “Look at this community… people playing together and enjoying themselves.”
